ImageMichael will be supporting his chosen charity, Cure Leukaemia, throughout his benefit year

Leukaemia, in all its forms, is one of the commonest cancers with 25,000 new cases of it, or related disorders, developing every year in the United Kingdom while approximately 7,000 adults in the West Midlands currently have leukaemia. Whilst real progress has been made in the treatment of childhood leukaemia, there still remains major challenges in providing curative therapies in the majority of adults. There is therefore an urgent clinical need to develop new and more effective treatments for adults with leukaemia.

Cure Leukaemia is a registered charity set up to support an innovative Centre for Clinical Haematology at the University Hospital Birmingham known generally as the Leukaemia Centre.

The Centre aims to provide new drug and transplant therapies for leukaemia patients. It is being achieved by supporting an established team of world class scientists and clinicians who are working together to develop new and highly effective treatments for leukaemia. In addition, the Centre strives to support patients and give access to information and resources while enabling them to have access to new therapies in a carefully controlled clinical environment.

Michael joins Warwickshire cricketer Dougie Brown, England Ashes hero Ashley Giles, former England footballer Geoff Thomas and adventurer and explorer Kay White as sporting supporters of the charity.
